String Furniture is more than just a flash of inspiration! Certain things are so strongly associated with a certain era that they become timeless. This certainly applies to the String shelving system, designed by Nils Strinning in 1949. It may seem strange that something as simple and inconspicuous as this small, delicate, and lightweight shelf with its thin wire frame could become a 20th-century design classic.

If everything has a backstory, it's one of laziness and steel wire. Before the era of dishwashers, drying dishes was a time-consuming chore. Air-drying dishes was more hygienic than using a tea towel, but it required a practical dish rack. The elfa dish rack was Nils Strinning's first successful invention in 1946. Nils Strinning is therefore the father of the entire elfa system with its wire baskets, which can still be found in most cupboards today or as dish racks by the sink. Nothing is too inconspicuous to be improved: that's how you could summarize Nils Strinning's view of the world. He combines the inventor's demand for functionality with the aesthete's sense of proportion and detail.
